Save big money today

Sick of paying $3.49/gallon for milk or $1.95 for a loaf of bread? Then don’t, I know I don’t. This week’s website of the week can help you just like it has me.

I have four kids between the ages of 3 and 9. I can, and do, feed them all and myself for under $125 a week. It wasn’t always like that, I remember a year ago spending an average of about $200 a week.

I have not spent more than $1.99 on a gallon of milk or $.99 on a half gallon this year. The same with bread, I will never spend more than $1.00 and that is a good thing when you go through 3-4 loaves a week. We are lucky in this area, Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, no matter where you live in the East Valley you probably have at least 4 major grocery chains you can shop at, and it’s worth it to hit them all.

But how do you know where the best deal is this week? That is where this week’s website fits in. Allison’s Arizona Grocery Deals does all the leg work for you. Allison posts the best deals at each store and you can plan your trip. When you find milk at $1.99/gallon buy 2-3 weeks worth, that will allow you make it until one of the other stores runs the same deal in 2-3 weeks, and they will. When you find toothpaste or toilet paper for free? And trust me I have a garage full of stuff to prove it is possible, stock up! The best part is you do not need to spend hours a week doing all the comparison shopping as Allison does it for you.

Another one of my favorite money saving tips is on buying meet. If you are like me, you go through a lot of lunch meat like ham during the week. Don’t buy this at the deli, you can get it half priced if you go to the meet department. Buy a little 2-3 lb boneless ham and ask the butcher to cut for you. They will, and you just paid half the price you would at the deli. Do you want 95% fat-free hamburger, but pay less than the 70% fat-free? Watch for when London Broil steaks are on sale then buy 10 lbs and ask the butcher to grind it into burger. I often do this and usually spend about $1.49/lb, take it home and freeze it into 1 pound packs and you are set for a while.

With today’s prices on everything jumping up it is worth the effort to save a little money. I am saving an average of about $75 a week since I started doing this. That is $3,900 a year. What can you do with an extra $3,900 a year?

What is your neighborhood walking score?

One thing many people take into account when buying a new home is how walking friendly the neighborhood is. Especially after you live in a neighborhood that has a lot within walking distance, then you will often want the same opportunities at your new house.

That leads to this week’s website of the week, WalkScore.com. WalkScore rates your neighborhood and the friendliness to walking opportunities. When you enter your address to search it will generate a map of the area and rate your location on a 1-100 scale.

So next time you are looking at a house to buy enter in the address and see what your potential location offers.
